Arsenal had a very difficult Friday as they lost 2-0 to Brentford in the opening fixture of the Premier League. The newly promoted side were the better team throughout, and Mikel Arteta clearly has some work to do with the Gunners.

Looking frustrated for much of the match, the manager will hope he can get some signings in quickly to help his team reach a better level. One of the likeliest is Martin Odegaard, with the Norwegian increasingly linked with a return to Arsenal in recent days.

The midfielder has been left out of Real Madrid’s squad for the start of La Liga, and it’s abundantly clear Carlo Ancelotti isn’t a huge fan of the player. In a press conference on Friday, the manager was asked about Odegaard and his response was that he’s told the 22-year-old there’s a lot of competition ahead of him.

Saturday’s edition of AS points out that Odegaard doesn’t really fit with Ancelotti’s preferred 4-3-3 system, which is obviously an issue. That makes an exit likelier, and it’s stated the player is ‘heading to London’.

Described as a ‘priority’ target for Arteta, the midfielder is now ‘getting closer’ to Arsenal after progress was made ‘in recent hours’.

AS believe a deal can be done at around €50m, and they say Odegaard has given ‘full approval’ to the move.
