Brighton and Hove Albion star Leandro Trossard has insisted he is ‘ready for a starting place’ with Belgium at the World Cup and believes his performances merit as much.
Trossard has been the star of the show for Brighton this season, with seven goals and three assists in 13 games in the Premier League so far.
It means he is almost certain to be a part of Belgium’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar, but whether he will be handed a starting spot by manager Roberto Martinez remains to be seen.
The Belgium boss has regularly called up Trossard to his squads over the last few years, with the Brighton man making 21 appearances under him to date.
A starting spot has been hard to come by, though, with Martinez continuing to back Eden Hazard despite his struggles at Real Madrid over the last few years.
That’s a debate the Belgium boss has refused to back down in, continuing to insist that Hazard has his trust, even if Trossard continues to shine for Brighton.
The issue of who starts between the pair is one that will follow Belgium to the Middle East, but as far as Trossard is concerned, he’s done as much as he can.
“I am ready for a starting place and my performance speaks for itself,” he told TV Limburg, relayed by Voetbal Niuews.
“I think I made it as difficult as possible for the national coach, which was also my intention.
“Now we have to wait and see if the coach has set aside a place in the starting line-up for me. I hope I can continue my good form at the World Cup.”
