Jorge Cuenca hasn’t enjoyed regular playing time since swapping Villarreal for Fulham in August of last year.
The centre-back’s contract expires in 2028, with Fulham having an option to extend it for another year. He’s unlikely to see that out and there’s a good possibility he’ll eave Marco Silva’s side this summer.
That’s according to O Jogo, and they mention this when covering Benfica’s interest in the 25-year-old.
The Eagles aren’t focusing on strengthening the centre-back position yet, after Nicolás Otamendi signed an extension. Benfica may have to sign a new player if António Silva is sold and, in that case, they will consider the Fulham player.
Journalist Sacha Tavolieri was the first to report interest and O Jogo back it up, adding that Benfica made initial contact with Fulham to ask about Cuenca.
Fulham invested €6m to buy the Spaniard and Benfica could offer a fee close to that or try to sign him on loan with a purchase option.
The Primeira Liga club would consider Cuenca if Silva were to be sold. Benfica have put this operation on hold as they’re yet to make a final decision on the 21-year-old Portugal international.
