Newcastle United’s Emil Krafth has told Fotbollskanalen that Malmö FF showed interest in signing him in the winter market.

On February 8th, Fotboll Direkt reported the Swedish club, FC Copenhagen and Brøndby were looking at the possibility of signing the right-back on a free transfer in the summer.

This option was ruled out a few days later after Newcastle extended the 29-year-old’s deal until 2025.

Last month, the Sweden international stated that a meeting with Eddie Howe was key in his decision to extend with the Premier League side.

Fotbollskanalen have been focusing on Malmö’s interest in the winter market and Krafth made it clear that he’s not ready to return to his homeland just yet.

“They were a bit optimistic. I feel that I have a few years left abroad before that question should be addressed. But I feel that I’m not done abroad,” he said.

When asked if the Swedish club had contacted his agent, Krafth explained: “Yes, they checked with the agent. I don’t think it was more than that.”

The Newcastle fullback came up through the ranks of Lagans AIK’s youth system and had a short spell with their first team. After that, he was at Östers IF and Helsingborgs IF, before leaving Sweden when he joined Bologna in 2015.

When further asked whether he can return to Allsvenskan [Swedish top flight] in a few years, he said: “Yeah, I feel that way. But at some point, it will certainly be Allsvenskan.”

The Swede was sidelined with an injury at the start of the season and since regaining full fitness in November, he’s made 12 appearances for Newcastle.
