In mid January, Catalan newspaper Sport reported Wolves had made a request to loan Riqui Puig from Barcelona.
The Premier League club were said to be ‘very interested’ and wanted to sign the player on loan with an option to buy. Their attempts dated back to the previous summer window.
Wolves were said to still have their interest, and it was explained Puig would have a decision to make soon. A transfer next summer was seen likelier than the window just closed, and the situation is building.
Puig is a 22-year-old midfielder, and so far this season he’s had 293 minutes in La Liga, not featuring at all in the past four matches. He was unhappy under Ronald Koeman, and the Catalan media tended to blame the manager. At times it seemed like the La Masia product could do no wrong in the eyes of many around Barcelona.
That situation has changed, with Xavi Hernandez not using him much either, and other, younger, players from La Masia since overtaking Puig.
Sport now report the youngster is becoming the ‘eternal promise’, not fulfilling his potential or coming close to it. He’s repeatedly refused to leave on loan, despite his club encouraging him.
He faces another lost season, and Sport believe things will be different in the summer, when he’s going to have to leave or face stagnation.
There’s plenty of offers, and given the earlier claims it would seem Wolves will be one of them.
