On Monday, De Telegraaf reported Ajax have reached a verbal agreement with Tottenham Hotspur to sign Steven Bergwijn.
It was also stated the Dutch champions were waiting for email confirmation from Spurs with regards to the forward’s transfer.
De Telegraaf on Tuesday explain the 24-year-old broadly agreed a deal with Ajax five weeks ago. Since then, he has been in the ‘waiting room’, and his patience is ‘tested even further’.
Despite verbal agreeing with Spurs chief Fabio Paratici over a €30m fee on Sunday, the lawyers of the two clubs have not yet put this agreement on paper.
The Eredivisie winners have received a confirmation email from Spurs, asking for clarification about the payment terms and the percentage they will receive from the player’s future sale.
De Telegraaf state Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy had a ‘different opinion’ than Paratici over the verbal agreement reached with Ajax.
It seems only Ajax’s top boss, Edwin van der Sar, can ‘break the deadlock’ by reaching an agreement with Levy over ‘secondary conditions’. This may be related to bonuses and the percentage of a future sale.
If the Amsterdam club can agree a deal with Levy quickly, then the soap opera around the Bergwijn deal will come to an end.
Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder, meanwhile, hopes to have the Dutch attacker at his disposal soon.
For now, Bergwijn is expected to join Antonio Cone’s training sessions at Tottenham on Wednesday.
