Despite having 11 previous caps for his country, Viktor Fischer had never played at Denmark’s home ground, Telia Parken.

Nevertheless, the new Middlesbrough signing, who only has 81 minutes of game time under his belt so far under Aitor Karanka, marked his first appearance in front of a home crowd with an assist.

Feeding Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen with a delightful backheel to allow the attacking midfielder to coolly slot home with his left foot, Fischer played a huge part in an important victory as it helped secure his country’s first three points to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

Speaking to Ekstrabladet, the player explained exactly how much this opportunity meant to him.

He said: “I’d only been at the Parken as a spectator before. I’ve been looking forward to this so much for the past week. This is definitely one of the proudest moments in my career so far.

“The people came to the Parken to see something new. They came to be entertained and see Denmark win. And I think we lived up to it.”

The forward did, however, admit he knew that to keep his spot in the Denmark team, regardless of his performances, he would need to get more game time with Middlesbrough.

At 22 years of age, there’s still plenty of time for that, and if his talent starts to shine through, he’ll be a starter at Riverside in no time.
