During the summer there was plenty of scepticism in the German media over Felix Wiedwald’s transfer to Leeds United from Werder Bremen.

It was seen that Wiedwald was forced out by the Bundesliga club to make way for Jiri Pavlenka, but the Czech Republic international is now starting to win over his doubters.

Wiedwald signed for Leeds United in the summer on a three year deal after it became apparent he had no future at Werder Bremen. It was well documentedAlexander Nouri was bringing in Pavlenka from Slavia Prague to replace Wiedwald, despite the 27 year old being Werder’s No.1 last season.

The German press made it clear the now Leeds United player was forced out of the club by Werder Bremen coach Nouri, and subsequently pushed towards a move to England.

Pavlenka had a shaky start to his career with Werder, and received criticism for his performances during preseason, most notably from former-goalkeeper-turned-WWE-wannabe Tim Wiese.

However, there’s been a change in fortunes for the Czech, and 90mins.de say the player has been ‘one of the few positives’ in a difficult season for the German side. Werder Bremen currently lie in the relegation zone, but Pavlenka has been putting in some strong performances.

WhoScoed rate Pavlenka as Werder’s second best player so far this season, and he’s been given the team’s highest player rating in 2 of his last 3 matches.

Pavlenka’s slow start coincided with Wiedwald’s impressive early season form for Leeds United, when the German went several games without conceding in the Championship. However, Wiedwald has seen his form dip in recent weeks, and last weekend was dropped (although he insists he was rested) for Leeds United’s clash with Bristol City.
