Diafra Sakho almost left West Ham at the end of the last summer transfer window, and it was no secret that an exit was the plan.
West Ham had a different opinion on whether Sakho could go, and how he’d be leaving if a transfer was agreed to. One of the deals which got the most attention as the window was closing, Sakho to Rennes was quite entertaining in its calamity.
Since then the player hasn’t started a Premier League game for West Ham, but has picked up 12 substitute appearances in the league and 2 games in the League Cup. Three goals have come across those matches, and in a goals-per-minute ratio it’s not a bad return for the player.
Sakho will turn 28 years of age on Christmas Eve and being assured he can finally move to Rennes could be a nice present.
So what do Rennes think about it? L’Equipe asked the club’s president Olivier Letang about Sakho: “He’s a very good player, but it’s too early to give names. We must open a maximum of tracks.”That means, in none football diplomacy speak: ‘Yes, we’d like him but given what happened last time we getting a few options together.’
Now it’s one for David Moyes to consider, and West Ham’s board to decide if it’s worth holding out for a reasonable transfer fee.
