Newcastle United fans probably remember that during the last transfer window, the club were much linked to Andreas Samaris from Benfica.

There were several reports of negotiations for the player, and even an offer was said to be submitted, but a deal was never found.

Something interesting is that the Magpies sent an official to watch Benfica this week, and even though Samaris couldn’t get off the bench, it’s possible that the emissaries were there to watch him, a risk to be taken since he’s a squad rotation player.

But this doesn’t seem to be a good time to try to get him, because as reported by newspaper Record today, Samaris has already started his negotiations for a contract renewal.

The outlet claims there’s the wish ‘from both parties’ for the deal to be signed, and Benfica want to do it quickly as the current contract expires in 2019.

There’s every chance this will drag on at least until the January window, unless Samaris is thrilled being a squad player, giving Newcastle United time for an approach.
