Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has been told it is “obvious” that Everton midfielder Amadou Onana should be starting for the country at the World Cup.

Onana has been impressing at Everton since signing from Lille in a big money move in the summer as part of the Blues’ rebuild.

He’s been a regular for Frank Lampard since, establishing himself as one of the key players in the midfielder alongside Idrissa Gana Gueye and Alex Iwobi.

His performances have not gone unnoticed by Martinez, who called him up for the last international break and was suitably convinced enough to include him in the squad for the World Cup squad in Qatar.

The question is now whether he will start ahead of more established stars such as Axel Witsel, who has been a mainstay of the team for the last decade.

For Joos, though, there is no battle for a starting place and it is clear that the Everton man should be in the team.

“It’s so obvious that we should start with Onana, but I wonder if the national coach thinks the same way,” the commentator stated to Sporza, relayed by Voetbal Nieuws.

“For years I have not understood why Witsel is still unchallenged. Witsel is top to play football out of trouble. You can always lose the ball to him; he is a firebox.

“But we lack a defensive midfielder who also provides drive. I saw at Fulham Palhinha at work. That is ab-nor-normal. We have been missing a type like that for years.”
