Last summer, Kasper Schmeichel joined Celtic on a free transfer and starred for Brendan Rodgers’ side. He’s kept 23 clean sheets and conceded 41 goals from 44 games so far this season.
The Denmark international’s fine displays for Celtic have helped him retain his place in the national team.
Lars Knudsen was interim manager for the national team’s matches in September and October. Denmark then appointed Brian Riemer as permanent manager, and he was in charge for the last international break.
Bold.dk state neither Knudsen nor Riemer confirmed the first-choice goalkeeper for the last three international breaks.
The former Anderlecht manager has given an interview to the outlet, where he clears up ‘all doubts and uncertainty’ around who will be in goal for Denmark. The Celtic star made his debut for his country in 2013 and played 111 games so far.
Riemer insists the 38-year-old has earned his place to continue starting for Denmark after impressing for Brendan Rodgers’ side this season.
“Right now, Kasper is our first goalkeeper,” he said.
“Kasper has impressed me over the past four months with his performances for Celtic. He has shown stability and a very high level. When you get into the team of the round in the play-off round for the Champions League, it tells you very well what form you are in.”
Leicester City’s Mads Hermansen, Chelsea’s Filip Jørgensen and Sparta Prague’s Peter Vindahl will all look to challenge the Celtic player.
“As national coach, I’m very pleased that we have four goalkeepers who are performing at the top level right now. It is really a good and healthy competitive situation for Danish football, we currently have such a strong field in the goalkeeper position,” Riemer explained.
