Despite all the money that is currently being spent in the Premier League, few transfers have impressed as much as Newcastle United’s ability to sign Sandro Tonali from AC Milan.

The deal seemingly came out of nowhere at first, and despite the financial pull the Magpies may have had, there was a feeling it would be tough to convince the club favourite to leave.

Newcastle eventually managed it, and sent €70m over to the Serie A side, who have used it to reinvest in multiple players, much to the enjoyment of Rafael Leão, who spoke to Milan Reports, relayed by TuttoMercatoWeb, about Tonali’s exit and what followed.

He said: “The club made good transfers. I like Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Pulisic and Tijjani, and I feel that the team is stronger now. We are looking forward to this season to reach our goals: to win a Scudetto, for example, and going forward in the Champions League.

“Sandro was an important player for us but now he’s gone. I was a really good friend of his. I wish him the best in the Premier League. I think another two or three players will join our team and the squad will be complete.”

In short, while Leão is disappointed that Newcastle were able to buy Tonali, he does feel the Serie A side have spent the money wisely, and the squad as a whole will be better off in the long run than if they had kept the Italian midfielder around.

That’s likely what AC Milan had in mind when they accepted the Magpies’ offer, and they will be glad to see their own players feeling the same way.
