Ajax striker Chuba Akpom has hinted there is a transfer opportunity for Nottingham Forest this summer, if he isn’t going to be given a starting role by the Dutch club.

The striker has been speaking to NOS, relayed by Soccer News, in the Netherlands about his situation at Ajax as Nottingham Forest are linked with bringing him back to England.

He joined Ajax in a €12.3m deal from Middlesbrough last summer as they looked to strengthen their goalscoring options, but he quickly found himself out of the picture, with Brian Brobbey establishing himself as first choice.

That didn’t stop him enjoying a relatively strong campaign, though, with 15 goals and three assists in total and 11 goals in 25 games in the Eredivisie despite only eight starts.

He’s already spoken about his desire to remain at the club this summer and work under new manager Francesco Farioli, who was hired this summer after a disastrous year for the club.

But it seems that desire to stay is rooted in reality, and if he isn’t offered regular first team football next season, then a move could be on the cards.

That should be good news to Nottingham Forest, who have already been credited with an interest and a potential move this summer.

“What I have learned in the course of my career is to just keep focusing on football. If you start thinking about things outside the field, you get distracted,” he said.

“I don’t know if I’ll be here next week or at the end of the transfer window, but every day I come to the club I train as if I’m going to stay here this season.

“I don’t think I can sit on the bench for another year as a second striker. If I get more involved in the competitions this year, I would like to stay here. If not, then it might be time to look further. We will see.”
