It’s been a few months since Bruno Varela started being linked to a departure from Benfica. Even though the goalkeeper finished the season as their starter, he now doesn’t have much of a future at the club.

In the meantime, there was a specific Championship side being linked to him, and that was Nottingham Forest. Again and again.

The possibility of a loan deal was reported at first, with insistence of interest.

The Portuguese press continue to insist that the goalkeeper could move to the Championship, without Nottingham Forest being named directly.

This possibility is reported by newspaper Record today. Even though a move to Spain is more likely, they claim that the chance of a Championship transfer is still on the table.

Nottingham Forest have already signed Costel Pantilimon and Luke Steele on free transfers this summer, which makes a move for Varela even more unlikely now.

These continous links to England could well be some pressure for clubs from other countries to work faster. We know that in the last days of the transfer window, agents and directors use the media in every possible way.
