The Portuguese press had several stories this morning about Alfa Semedo and Yuri Ribeiro, who are both about to be announced by Nottingham Forest.

Local newspapers are certain the midfielder is joining the club on a loan deal, while the left-back moves on a permanent transfer, with 50% of a future fee staying with the Eagles.

Outlet O Jogo brings an interesting story on it today, claiming that Ribeiro’s deal isn’t exactly a particular deal negotiated between Benfica and Nottingham Forest. This is actually a way the Portuguese side found to let some players go.

It’s explained that Portuguese clubs are only allowed to loan six players to the local league, and each loanee must go to a different club.

That rule limits the big clubs from having their youngsters spread through the country. And since not all foreign sides will accept loan deals, a sale keeping 50% of a future transfer has been the solution in several cases.

Nottingham Forest are now seen as a partner. Newspaper A Bola recalls that in 2016, Hidelberto Pereira and João Teixeira were both loaned to the club. And last summer, Diogo Gonçalves and João Carvalho have gone the same way.

Now since Semedo’s deal doesn’t include a buying option for Forest, Benfica probably believe he can fulfil his potential and return to Lisbon with a higher value. Perhaps to play for the Eagles, or to be sold for much more.
