Marcelo Gallardo announcing that he’s set to call an end to his time at River Plate In December has seen endless rumours regarding where the manager will end up.
He’s been with the Argentine club since 2014 and had a hugely successful time, including winning the Copa Libertadores on two occasions.
Still only 46-years-of-age, there’s plenty of time for him to have success elsewhere in the coming years, and Mundo Deportivo South America say that’s seen links with the likes of Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion.
Brighton links were before they appointed Roberto De Zerbi, whereas Aston Villa links relate to him being a potential successor to Steven Gerrard.
The Birmingham club currently find themselves 16th in the Premier League, and are just a point clear of the relegation zone. Given the investment at Aston Villa, should things not improve quickly then it would be no surprise to see them look for another leader.
Mundo Deportivo South America say there’s been ‘nothing formal yet’, but it’s stated Gallardo’s entourage have made clear the manager has a ‘great desire’ to work in England’s top flight.
Despite all of that, many in Argentina feel Gallardo would deserve a club closer to the top of the table, however, those jobs don’t come around so often and aren’t usually given to South Americans with no experience of managing in Europe.
