Two days ago, Watford’s Ken Sema has received an emergency call up from Sweden coach Janne Andersson following an injury setback to Ludwig Augustinsson in their 3-0 defeat to Belgium last week.
The left wing-back and Gabriel Gudmundsson will compete for a place in the national team’s starting lineup for the clash against Azerbaijan later today.
Andersson was asked who among the Watford player and Gudmundsson would feature in the upcoming clash and the Sweden manager’s comments are relayed by Fotbollskanalen.
“Everyone who is here competes, but somehow you still have to take things in the right order. Then you can interpret what it means as you wish,” he said.
“No matter who is playing now, there are similar types, offensive players who have taken a step back. Gabbe plays in a back four at Lille and has looked good. “Ken has mainly played wingback in a back five at Watford and done well. It feels like two sensible options.”
Operating mainly as a left wing-back, he has managed five goals and seven assists from 33 matches in all competitions this season. Sema’s performances for Watford has helped him return to the Sweden squad for a competitive fixture for the first time since October 2021.
The Hornets wing-back’s last five appearances for Sweden were in the friendlies and his last competitive appearance was against France in the UEFA Nations League in September 2020.
The Watford player now feels ready to feature for his country against Azerbaijan today.
“It’s not up to me. I have been called up and haven’t been on the pitch that much. I’ve only trained one session with the team and now it’s time for the match. But if I get to play, I’m ready,” Sema explained.
