Back at the start of the month, reports from the English press claimed that West Ham United were interested in São Paulo midfielder Igor Gomes.
It was said at the time that the Hammers could offer £13m to for the signing.
Now as journalist Jorge Nicola went after this story, he managed to speak to the player’s agent about this chase, and found out that the Premier League side indeed made a bid to get the 22-year-old.
However, the offer wasn’t the same as reported. It’s claimed that West Ham tried to sign Gomes on a loan deal with ‘a small financial compensation’.
Agent Wagner Ribeiro explained why the bid was turned down by all parties involved: “It’s not interesting for São Paulo, nor for the player”.
It’s claimed that Gomes’ staff believes he’d have fewer opportunities to play in case he stays at a club only on a loan deal.
Nicola writes that São Paulo’s idea is to let the player go only on a permanent move.
Regarding those claims of a bid of £13m, it’s said that would be the ‘dream offer’ for the Brazilian side.
