Christian Eriksen lost his place in Manchester United’s starting lineup even before Ruben Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag last November.
The Denmark international has played eight games under Amorim, with just one league start.
Eriksen’s contract expires in June and his future beyond that is most likely to be away from at Manchester United. His compatriot, Peter Schmeichel, has encouraged him to join Ajax in the summer.
Voetbal Primeur editor-in-chief Dennie van Laar had a chat with the former Manchester United goalkeeper, and he talked about the midfielder.
The Manchester United player spent five years at Ajax before leaving them for Tottenham in 2013.
Van Laar asked him what the best step for the former Tottenham Hotspur man would be. Schmeichel immediately asked the journalist if he wants Eriksen back to Ajax and then went on explain why the Amsterdam club would be a great option for him.
“That [move to Ajax] would be a great step for him,” he said.
“Of course, as we know, he is a midfielder. Nowadays in the Premier League you need players who can sprint up and down for 90 minutes.”
“The way Ruben Amorim wants to play also doesn’t suit him, he wants to win the ball back quickly. At a very high pace. That’s not in his nature. Unfortunately, Eriksen no longer has that energy.”
“He’s a great player. Some of the things he does on the field… He’s still so good on the ball and technically. I think Ajax would be a fantastic move for him.”
In September 2024, Ajax technical director Alex Kroes admitted the Dane was on their list last summer and that they didn’t make an approach due to their failure to make room in the squad.
