Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad on Wednesday have a look at the unfortunate situation of Alexander Scholz, with the 24 year old’s career hitting something of a bump in the road.
The Danish central defender now isn’t guaranteed a place in Standard Liege’s starting eleven, and may have to get used to being on the Belgian club’s bench. It’s a big turnaround for Scholz, with Het Nieuwsblad saying Everton were keen at the end of 2016, and the player being considered ‘the next big thing’ in Belgian league football.
Ronald Koeman sent Everton scouts to watch Scholz, but the manager was told: “Good for Belgium, not good enough for the Premier League.”
Everton and Koeman subsequently decided to pass up the opportunity to sign Scholz, going for other options instead at Goodison Park, and that may have been a wise decision.
Despite Standard’s chairman Bruno Venanzi saying, around the same time Everton scouts weren’t impressed, there was widespread interest, things haven’t turned out that way for Scholz.
