Celtic will not be travelling to Madrid as ‘tourists’ for their clash with Real Madrid tomorrow as Ange Postecoglou’s side owe a ‘debt’ owed to their fans.
That’s according to AS, who cover the game today and how Celtic owe their fans a win in the Champions League.
The Bhoys are already out of this year’s competition after failing to win any of their first five games, something that has left them bottom of Group F on two points.
AS explain that they are ‘in debt to their fans’ after failing to win in UEFA’s top competition since 2017 but victory at the Bernabéu ‘would change everything.’
“It can’t end like this,” a Celtic fan tells the newspaper, referencing their dismal return to the competition and a ‘disappointing’ group stage without a win and with just three goals scored.
That misery can have a ‘sweet ending’, though, something the 10,000 strong contingent of fans travelling to Spain are aware of.
It’s a message which has gotten through to the squad too, with one source inside the Scottish club insisting to the newspaper: “We’re not going to Madrid as tourists, we’re going to put up a fight”.
They know that while there is nothing at stake, it would ‘mean a lot’ to the club and the fans, to whom they ‘owe a win’.
The sentiment from them is a clear one, ‘if they’re going to play, let them play hard’ and prove that Celtic did deserve to be in the competition.
