Marcus Antonsson has told the Swedish media he didn’t have plans to return to his home country in the summer, but once Malmo came in for him he jumped at the chance.
Earlier today we covered comments made by Djurgarden sporting director Bosse Andersson who said he had an agreement with Leeds United before the player joined Malmo instead.
Speaking to Fotboll Direkt, Antonsson was asked about his transfer from Leeds United to Malmo in the last transfer window: “This summer, I had a year left on the deal with Leeds, and I didn’t have a thought of moving home to Sweden at all. But when it’s Malmo concerned, with all that means, they are frequently the champions and a team that have been in Europe several times, it wasn’t a difficult decision.”
It’s been his displays in the Europa League which have caught the eye and his winning goal against Besiktas last night helped Malmo to the knockout stages of the competition at the expense of the Istanbul club.
His performances for Malmo are in total contrast to his time at Elland Road where he struggled to make any real impact.
The player made just a handful of appearances in his debut season with Leeds United and subsequently was loaned out to Blackburn Rovers in the last campaign.
