Aston Villa’s Amadou Onana needs a reality check and to be brought back down to earth after his performances during the international break.
That’s according to analyst Franky Van der Elst, who has laid into the Aston Villa midfielder today in comments relayed by Voetbalkrant.
The international break proved to be a disappointing one for Belgium as the positives of a 3-1 win over Israel were wiped away by the 2-0 defeat to France.
That loss has caused plenty of issues, with Kevin de Bruyne publicly sharing his frustration at the performance of his team and even hinting he could quit international football altogether because of it.
His comments and attitude have largely been backed by the nation’s media, who were equally frustrated by the display and ready to start criticising members of Domenico Tedesco’s squad.
Onana has found himself in the firing line as a result, with him and Aston Villa teammate Youri Tielemans both blamed for the result and believed to be the focus of De Bruyne’s ire.
Van der Elst has now joined in on that, criticising the Aston Villa man and believing that he needs to brought bac down to earth.
“I’m a bit like De Bruyne now: I’ve been keeping it bottled up for a long time, but now it has to come out,” he said.
“Onana is an ordinary player, not Beckenbauer, and yet he looks like one. He is not the playmaker for the defense, he is not good enough on the ball. It is time for him to be brought down to earth again.”
