Since Sporting played Manchester City and Pep Guardiola made big compliments to midfielder Matheus Nunes, the Portuguese media has been making some big noise about the 23-year-old.

In the past few days, several Premier League clubs have been linked to him, and out of the blue, a new side is mentioned in a story about the Brazilian today. That’s Arsenal.

The subject was brought up in an interview that newspaper Record features with former Gunners’ midfielder Gilberto Silva. He’s in Portugal for business and had a chat with the outlet.

A few questions were then made about Matheus Nunes, and one of them was regarding the comments made by Pep Guardiola, asking if the Sporting player would fit in the Premier League.

“I think so. He plays in Portugal, he’s super adapted to the European game model and that wouldn’t be a barrier for him. The Premier League is the most difficult championship in the world, due to the quality of the players and teams and where the coaches are considered the best in the world,” Gilberto Silva told Record.

“And when the praise comes from Pep Guardiola, the world stops to listen and attention is redoubled. And if Pep says that, it’s because he understands that Matheus Nunes can reach that level. I hope to see Matheus Nunes soon in the Premier League.”

Record then asked Gilberto Silva: “At your Arsenal?”. And his answer was: “Why not?”.

Just in the past week, we’ve seen Matheus Nunes getting linked to the likes of Everton, Manchester City, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Obviously not all of them should move for his signing in the summer, but there should really be some competition for his signing soon.

The word in Portugal is that Sporting will request at least €30m to let him go, which is more than affordable for a club of Arsenal’s stature.

Maybe Gilberto can have a word?
