For the past few days, claims from Brazil and France have talked about the possibility of Paris Saint-Germain making an approach for Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimarães in the winter market.
On Tuesday, TNT Sports journalist Marcelo Bechler stated FFP has stopped the Ligue 1 side from spending big this month. Therefore, they took a step back in their chase for the 26-year-old.
ESPN Brasil also state PSG may have to cancel their plans to sign the Newcastle star this month.
On Monday, Guimarães’ agent Giuliano Bertolucci met PSG executive Antero Henrique and their advisor, Luís Campos, after Luis Enrique gave his approval to the potential transfer.
The Brazil international’s release clause of €116m [fee can be paid in three instalments] isn’t an issue for PSG, according to ESPN Brasil. It’s claimed Campos found a problem with his salary and that’s one of the reasons why the French club have decided to postpone the deal until next summer.
ESPN Brasil state Guimarães currently earns €1m per month at Newcastle and he ‘would not accept earning less’. This is a problem for PSG, who are working to lower their wage bill.
Kylian Mbappé’s future is also another factor. His deal expires in 2024 and without sorting out his future, PSG cannot make certain decisions to reshape their squad.
Quite why it’s believed Guimarães should consider a pay cut to join PSG isn’t clear. One of the attractions of moving to the French club is a huge salary and accepting less doesn’t make a lot of sense.
