Earlier on Friday, we brought you the news from La Provence that Marseille were close to giving up on Aston Villa’s Carlos Sanchez and Jordan Veretout.
The reason behind this was the club’s inability to convince the players to agree lower wages to what they are currently on at the Championship club, and the Ligue 1 side have seemingly moved on to other targets.
According to L’Equipe in France, Marseille have now turned their attention to Norwich’s Youssouf Mulumbu, formerly of West Brom.
The 29-year-old, who arrived from the Midlands club last summer, struggled to have an impact, mostly because of an early injury, and only made 10 appearances in all competitions.
His standing at Norwich is such that L’Equipe report the player should be released a year early from his contract with the Championship club, meaning Marseille wouldn’t have to pay a transfer fee for the defensive midfielder.
The French newspaper state negotiations between the player’s agents and the Ligue 1 club will take place this week-end to see if they can reach an agreement.
This has also been confirmed by La Provence, who claim the player is one of many on Gunter Jacob’s shortlist, Marseille’s new director of football.
Now, for them to find an alternative to Veretout…
