Fleetwood Town manager, and Everton fan, Joey Barton has sat down with L’Equipe for an interview and the result is published in Saturday’s edition of the French newspaper.
The former Manchester City and Newcastle United man spent the majority of his playing career in England, while he also had a loan spell at Marseille during the 2012/13 season. It was Queens Park Rangers who sent him on a temporary deal to Ligue 1.
It was no surprise that L’Equipe asked him about the difference in the way the football is played in the two countries and while explaining it, he stressed that new fans of the sport want to support a team that wins and back players who are superstars.
To explain it further, Barton gave the example of his six-year old son, who supports the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Mohamed Salah and Harry Kane, but not Neymar.
The Fleetwood boss was asked if his son is forbidden from using the Paris Saint-Germain forward’s name at home, and the 36-year-old said: “(Laughs) We do not speak that name at home.”
“His friends support all Liverpool. The other day, he asks me, ‘Daddy, can I have the Liverpool kit?’ I said, ‘No, you support Everton.’ He made a weird face, he did not understand too much.”
Barton aims to make it to the top in club management, maybe that could involve a spell with Everton… but not Liverpool.
