As you might imagine, the prospect of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer becoming the new Manchester United manager, at least until the end of the season, is very exciting news in Norway.
As well as having live blogs running trying to keep the local populace up to date with what their national treasure’s future could look like, they’ve also asked around to find out if the former Red Devils striker is the right man for the job.
For Henning Berg, it’s a no brainer.
He told VG: “It’s great for Norwegian football, but first and foremost it’s great for Ole himself. He has a very big status in the club and trained the reserve team with great success. He has good contacts in the club so it seems logical as a transition solution, and maybe it’ll go so well he’ll carry on.”
That is, it seems, what Manchester United could be hoping for, giving the interim manager until the end of the season to prove himself, but if things don’t improve, they can always say ‘thank you but goodbye’ and appoint a new long-term option.
Regarding the rumours, Berg believes there’s something in them, too.
He said: “It’s rare that there’s smoke without fire. He has the profile, the experience and status that makes him fit to lead the team until the end of the season.”
As for his past experience in the Premier League, which was failing to keep Cardiff away from relegation back to the Championship, Berg doesn’t feel like it matters.
He explained: “It was a completely different type of job. This will be one similar to training Molde. It’s a team to win.”
