With Flamengo getting used to being a club who are more involved in making big signings rather than selling their stars, the rumours regarding Newcastle United’s interest in Gabriel Barbosa had been a reason of worry for their fans.

That’s why there’s been several updates on this pursuit, even though the Magpies have apparently not moved for the transfer yet.

Back at the end of last week, we got to see Globo Esporte journalist Cahê Mota detailing Newcastle’s approach. He claimed that an intermediary made contact with people close to Gabigol to get to know the chances of a potential move.

This official was told that Flamengo would only accept to negotiate in case of a permanent transfer and the Rio de Janeiro club are those to be contacted in that case. Now it seems that hasn’t happened so far.

Speaking on Flamengo’s behalf, director Bruno Spindel said at the weekend that they haven’t been in touch with any clubs yet, claiming Gabigol is in their plans for this year.

“On the proposals from European clubs for Gabigol, I confirm here that there is nothing. No proposal or approach for the player arrived. Gabi is still in the planning for 2022, and will continue to help Flamengo a lot,” said Spindel (via O Dia).

Gabigol and Flamengo are currently on vacation, as the club wait for the arrival of their new coach, Paulo Sousa, to take charge for the start of the season.
