Christian Eriksen has carried the hopes of a nation for years, and now the Tottenham player is in his mid twenties, he’s grown into the role rather well.
Denmark got off to a terrible start with their World Cup qualifying campaign, so much so that at one point it appeared pretty much impossible for the country to get to Russia.
Eriksen and several other senior Denmark players then took those in charge of Danish football to task, wanting better treatment for players and a more professional outlook. Things like food and physical preparation were lacking, believed the Tottenham star, and others including Simon Kjaer, and an open letter was drafted.
Public opinion could have gone way or another, with Eriksen leaving himself open to accusations of being a pampered footballer. But, fortunately for all involved, things went the right way and changed.
And, as if by magic, Denmark went on a great run and now face a playoff against Republic of Ireland to reach the World Cup.
Now there’s more pressure.
Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet point out the huge money available to the country’s football association if qualification is assured. There’ll be around $12m just for getting to the tournament and competing, and if Denmark can progress that figures rises quickly and players will take a cut.
With Eriksen being the biggest star, all hopes point towards the Tottenham player, and Ekstra Bladet make that especially clear by picturing him.
A chance to become a bigger national hero awaits, and, if Eriksen can help Denmark get to the World Cup and then out of the group, a nice bounty for his teammates.
No pressure Christian.
