At the start of the January window, Chelsea showed keen interest in signing Benfica star Enzo Fernández and were open to negotiating a deal with the Portuguese club.

The Blues were unsuccessful in finding an agreement with the Eagles, but they seem to plan a new attempt for the midfielder.

On Monday, Record reported Chelsea are preparing a new raid to sign the 22-year-old this month with a €100m+ offer.

After yesterday’s claims from the Portuguese press, Argentina journalist César Luis Merlo took to Twitter to explain there has been ‘no formal offer of any type’ from Graham Potter’s side for the World Cup winner.

The Primeira Liga side are firm with their stance as they ‘will not negotiate’ with the west London club or any other team to sell the Argentina international.

If Chelsea are still keen to secure Fernández’s services in January, they will have to do it by activating his €120m release clause.

César Luis Merlo says it’s ‘clause or nothing’ for any club that wants to take the South American away from Benfica in the current window.
