Spending seven years at Aston Villa without ever making a first team appearance for them, Benjamin Siegrist is now having a late bloom over at Dundee United.
Arriving at the Scottish Premiership side in 2018 on a free transfer from FC Vaduz, the 28-year-old is enjoying a great 2020-21 season, putting in some outstanding performances that have caught the eye of a few clubs.
Among those are Celtic, who aren’t enjoying their best season to date, currently 19 points behind rivals Rangers, albeit with three games in hand.
However, their recent loss to Steven Gerrard’s men has put Neil Lennon’s side in a precarious position, and Blick in Switzerland say ‘it’s no longer a secret’ that the Parkhead residents ‘have been watching’ Siegrist for some time.
They aren’t the only ones, however, as CSKA Moscow, clubs from the Eredivisie and the Bundesliga are also after him.
All this interest is obviously flattering, which the goalkeeper admitted to, saying: “It could be an interesting transfer period, I’ll just let it come to me. I’m happy at Dundee United and grateful that they put me in this shop window. My goal is to play at the highest level. I am ready for the next step”.
Celtic would be able to offer him that, although he does all add ‘the Bundesliga would be very attractive’.
Blick state that ‘if a lucrative offer comes in’, Dundee United, who are ‘economically ailing’ will ‘probably let their number one go’.
Good news for Celtic, who now need to find money to make such a bid.
