Roma midfielder Jordan Veretout is ‘close to a farewell’ from the club and ready to listen to offers after Newcastle United showed interest in January.
That’s according to Roma Today, who say the midfielder’s diminishing lack of importance under Jose Mourinho has pushed him closer to the exit door.
Veretout was once a key player for the Italian side but has watched his status dwindle under Mourinho, particularly since the January signing of Sergio Oliveira.
That’s left him out of the picture entirely, and he now feels that the ‘confidence of the coach and the club is lacking’.
That’s led him to a point where he is ‘ready to listen’ to any offers that may come his way, and Newcastle could be one of them.
They were keen in January, and it’s state that they remain ‘admirers’ of the midfielder, with another busy transfer window expected in the summer.
Roma are more than happy to do business as they plan a ‘purge’ of their current squad to free up funds for the players Mourinho wants, and getting rid of Veretout’s €3m a year wages would help towards that.
They won’t let the Frenchman go on the cheap, though, and value their man at ‘no less than €25m’, a price they will presumably be relaying to Newcastle should they show interest again.
Of course, that’s a price the Magpies can pay comfortably given their spending power but whether they are willing to do so remains to be seen.
