Contracted to Watford for three years, with a loan to QPR in the middle, Gabriele Angella arrived from and left for Udinese on free transfers.

Moved around by the Pozzo family between the two clubs, as has been the case for many players, the centre-back is now currently on loan at RSC Charleroi in Belgium, where a knee injury has heavily hampered his season so far.

Never featuring for the Hornets in the Premier League, the now 29-year-old did, however, played an integral part in their Championship campaigns, going as far as scoring eight goals in his first season for the club.

Now back from his layoff, the player sat down with DH in Belgium, where he was asked about his time in England and how the moves came about.

He said: “My chairman, the owner of both Udinese and Watford, wanted to put me in England. I was fine with it. He wanted to create an ambitious project over there, which suited me. There was no gun to my head.

“I had a blast over there. It was less tactical than in Italy, and games were so enthusiastic. There’s a bit of that towards the end of games in Belgium. Stadiums were always full, and I enjoyed a great first season. Personally, I discovered a new culture and learnt a new language.”

Over the course of his three years at Watford, the defender made 82 appearances for the club, scored 11 goals and assisted teammates seven times.

Not bad for a centre-back.
