There’s every chance Matz Sels wishes he’d never left Gent for Newcastle United last summer. Winning the Belgian league, voted best goalkeeper in the country, and impressing in the Champions League, Sels gave it all up to sign for Newcastle United, who had just been relegated to the Championship.
That may have been understandable if Sels had been nailed on first choice, but Benitez didn’t seem to have a great deal of faith and, given the opportunity, the Newcastle United manager ostracised the 25 year old.
The last time Sels got on the pitch was in January. Karl Darlow has consistently been getting the nod, despite some very questionable performances thrown into his run of games.
For Sels, a transfer is increasingly likely. Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad have spoken to Lee Ryder of The Chronicle to mix a local perspective with the Belgium one.
The message is pretty clear to Sels: ‘No future at Newcastle United’
