Recently admitting he wasn’t against dropping down a level to find more first-team football than he currently is getting at Chelsea, Olivier Giroud allegedly had the chance to do just that in January.
According to Sud-Ouest in France, Bordeaux, who were quite active on the transfer market, reportedly approached the former Arsenal man regarding a potential return to Ligue 1.
The club, who brought in players like Josh Maja and Yacine Adli, were looking for experienced players to help the youngsters develop, and Giroud was on their list.
This information, the newspaper say, was discussed by various sources, but the new Bordeaux owners, GACP, refute it, claiming there was ‘never any contact’ with the Chelsea striker.
Furthermore, it seems it will be difficult for the French side to land Giroud in the summer, mostly due to the fact they look unlikely to qualify for any sort of European competition and the player’s wages, said to be around €115k/week, are far too large for them to handle.
