Newcastle United’s lack of ‘will’ led to them missing out on a move for Napoli striker Arkadiusz Milik.

That’s according to journalist Vincenzo Morabito, who says the player wasn’t convinced by the Magpies efforts to get him.

Milik left Napoli for Marseille in the January transfer window, with the Italian club deciding to sell and secure a fee as the striker’s contract was expiring in the summer.

Before his move to France, Milik had been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League, with several clubs all thought to be keen on him.

Steve Bruce’s side, in particular, were linked on several occasions, with their interest revealed back in May last year and then followed by several claims that they could make a move.

That never happened in the summer, but several reports afterwards claimed they were still interested, and it was stated in January that they had made a bid to try and get him.

Morabito has now backed those suggestions up, although he did not reveal when their offer was made.

“Milik to Newcastle? For Arek, the desire of the club was lacking,” he told Calcio Napoli 24.

“There was an offer of €20m, but Napoli at that moment considered his valuation higher, around €25-30m.

“I think it is not easy to work in a club with a president who is certainly good and active, Giuntoli is a top director of football, but perhaps he needs space.

“De Laurentiis is not an easy subject to please, both when selling and when buying. Image rights have blocked many businesses, for example.”
