Newcastle United’s pursuit for Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa is now becoming a serious subject in the Portuguese media.
Following the report from Jornal de Notícias which broke the news earlier this week, it’s now newspaper Record who managed to confirm the story and bring more details about it.
The outlet today writes the interest from the Magpies ‘is real’, making the club ‘serious candidates’ to land the 22-year-old this summer.
Now even though Newcastle are said to threaten Costa’s stay at Porto, Record also says the Dragons have ‘absolute tranquillity’ about the situation, since he recently renewed his contract and is protected by a €60m release clause.
That price is said to work as a ‘reference’ for the transfer market, even though the newspaper points out that goalkeepers rarely move for that much, so it’s unlikely a deal could be done for that amount.
The report also points out there are no ‘effective negotiations’ confirmed for now, as Newcastle only made ‘exploratory contacts’ so far. The hunt for a goalkeeper is said to be a ‘clear objective’ for the Magpies.
