Edging ever closer to the Premier League with their win against Wigan at the weekend, Newcastle are putting themselves in a great position for the summer transfer window, as they continue to look to bolster their squad for next season.

Going the other way, however, appears to be their bitter rivals Sunderland, who once again lost under David Moyes on Saturday, beaten 1-0 away against Watford, and the Black Cats currently sit rock bottom of the table with 20 points from 29 games.

With relegation in sight, improving their team for next season is likely to be difficult, and one player Sunderland could miss out on is Franck Acheampong, who was reported as a target for the club over the course of the season.

In fact, as things stand, you would expect Newcastle to be in the better position to complete a deal for the Anderlecht winger,  tracked by Rafa Benitez last year.

As recently revealed by DH, Acheampong was told he would be able to leave in the summer by his club if the price fixed by the club was met, and with a lot of interest in the player, an interesting bidding war could be on the cards in the coming months.

While the Championship title is still up for dispute, only a strong collapse would see the Magpies drop in the playoff zone, and with promotion so close, a move to an upcoming Premier League club will be far more appealing to a player looking for a move abroad than going to the Stadium of Light.

Of course, targets might have changed at both clubs by now, but with an exit near guaranteed in the summer, and great performances on his CV this season, especially at European level, it would be silly not to at least try.
