Newcastle United are ‘very interested’ in signing Barcelona’s Memphis Depay in the winter market, according to Sport.
The Netherlands international is on the exit ramp and the La Liga side will ‘welcome his sale’ in January since his deal expires at the end of this season.
Newcastle United have become the latest club to whom the forward has been offered and the Magpies, led by Eddie Howe, are said to be ‘very interested’ in securing his services.
It’s claimed the Premier League side tried signing the 28-year-old in the summer window, but no deal took shape. In order to change the outcome for January, Newcastle officials will try to convince the Dutchman to join them.
Xavi Hernández’s side, for their part, want to collect €10-15m from his sale, but the attacker is reluctant to leave in the next window. Depay’s idea is to finish the season at the Camp Nou and then leave as a free agent next summer.
On Wednesday, we covered a report which stated Newcastle are offering €20m, and we explained that didn’t make a great deal of sense.
A fee of €10m would seem more rational.
With Barca keen to get rid of the player, Howe’s side ‘hope to convince’ him to move to St James’ Park in January.
