Last weekend we covered Newcastle United’s repeated scouting of FC Porto matches in recent weeks. Rafael Benitez has sent his spies to several Porto games recently, and it’s a pattern which makes it increasingly obvious there’s a transfer target at the club.
Newcastle United had someone watch Porto demolish Leicester City 5-0 this week, as revealed by A Bola in their match report, one of several trips recently. The club had someone watch Porto play Braga last Saturday, and also their previous Champions League match against Club Brugge.
Newcastle were joined by scouts from many clubs at the Porto match, and most of those scouts then also watched Braga in the Europa League against Shakhtar, but not Newcastle.
It’s speculation to suggest who Newcastle United could be watching specifically, but last weekend we had an educated guess that it could be Hector Herrera. Rafael Benitez has been linked with the Mexican midfielder for years, and so to target him would be no surprise.
Herrera came on as a substitute for Porto as they changed things around a little. The Portuguese club play Feirense on Sunday afternoon, and whilst scouts don’t attend away matches as regularly, Feirense is less than half an hour away from Porto so it may be worth the trip for Newcastle’s spy.
