Yesterday it was announced Newcastle United have signed Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mikel Merino on a permanent deal, after initially bringing in the Spaniard on loan.

The Spanish media believe this has come as a blow to Valencia, with Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez getting one over his former club.

Super Deporte have today reported on Newcastle United’s new signing Merino, but it could have been much different in the last window.

During the summer Valencia were linked with 21 year old, and the youngster was an “objective” for the Spanish giants, as well as being on the verge of a move to Athletic Club Bilbao.

However, Merino took the decision to sign for Newcastle United on loan, and with him now joining the Premier League outright, Valencia’s hopes of signing the player look to have gone.

Merino has committed himself to Newcastle United until June 2022, and has moved to St James Park for a transfer fee in the region of £8m. The former Osasuna player has already played seven league games for the English side.
