Newcastle United’s chase for Vincent Aboubakar was taken with much excitement by the Portuguese press, with newspaper Record now calling the fight for the player an ‘auction’.

The reason for this battle is said to be the striker’s presence in the Confederations Cup, where he’s appearing for Cameroon.

It’s claimed that for now, the figures aren’t getting much higher than €10m, although Porto hope they can sell him for more because they only own 37.5% of his transfer rights.

Besiktas, where Aboubakar spent the last season on loan, are alongside Rennes and Newcastle in creating competition for the 25-year-old. According to the recent reports from Portugal, the French side would be in front, but Newcastle still haven’t shown how much they could pay.

Record even comments on reactions from Newcastle United fans, calling it ‘impressive’. They seem pleased there’s some positivity towards the potential transfer, maybe because it could help Porto get the fee they want.

A couple of days ago it was reported in Turkey that Newcastle are in ‘advanced talks’ to sign Aboubakar, which, if true, would put them ahead in the race given their financial strength over Rennes.
