According to report in the Turkish media, if Besiktas forward Cenk Tosun is sold in the next window it’s expected to he’ll break the transfer record for a player leaving Turkey for Western Europe.

The 26 year old in the past couple of weeks has been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Newcastle United reportedly one of the clubs leading the way to sign the  international.

CNN.Turk have reported on Tosun’s performance in the Champions League last night, in which his two goals secured a 2-1 victory over French champions AS Monaco.

The Turkish news outlet believes this will help to increase the value of Tosun ahead of the winter window, and it seems likely clubs such as Newcastle United will have to break the transfer record to sign the player.

Elvir Baljic, who was a Bosnia international, currently holds the transfer record for a player heading from Turkey to Western Europe, after joining Real Madrid for €16.3m in 1999, whilst Cengiz Ünder is the most expensive Turk to have left his own country for Western Europe, after he signed for AS Roma this summer for €15m.

It’s likely Tosun would break both records if he heads to England, and it looks like Newcastle United would have to vastly improve on the offer they made for the attacker this summer.

Newcastle United tabled a bid in the region of £8m for Tosun in the last window, but it was rejected by Besiktas. However, the Premier League club are still considering signing the Besiktas star, and have scouted the player during Turkey’s last two internationals.

It’s expected Newcastle United will come in with an improved bid in the new year, but face competition from other clubs.
