There is no sign of the Mikel Merino exit rumours calming.
On the front page of Estadio Deportivo’s Wednesday edition, the Newcastle United player is now the subject of another article from the same Seville newspaper.
Local club Real Betis are one of five La Liga sides interested in the player, and the slant of the reporting in Spain is that now it’s a case where Merino will go rather than if he’ll go.
There’s said to be an auction going on, but not the kind of auction that would please Newcastle United. The transfer has ‘entered a very intense phase’ according to Estadio and clubs are sending offers to the player’s representatives.
Merino now has offers ‘on the table’ and it’s down to him to pick the one he wants best before that club will negotiate with Newcastle United, according to the claims.
It’s not the way transfers are supposed be done, but it seems to be a common practice.
Perhaps more attention needs to be given to Newcastle and what their wishes are, because right now in Spain it’s being portrayed as a shoot out between five clubs, with the winner then snatching the player for a reasonably low fee.
