Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf this morning claim Ajax paid just €2m to sign Newcastle United midfielder Siem de Jong.

Yesterday it was confirmed the 28 year old would be returning to the Amsterdam Arena after a forgettable spell with Newcastle.

The BBC reported yesterday Ajax had signed De Jong for a transfer fee in the region of £4m. However, De Telegraaf say Ajax paid Newcastle United less than half of this, which the Dutch newspaper are describing as a ‘bargain’ deal.

It’s worth pointing out De Telegraaf is increasingly a pro-Ajax newspaper, and these leaks about De Jong’s transfer fee could possibly be seen as PR by the Dutch side, to show they’ve got the best deal possible for the midfielder.

De Jong signed for Newcastle United in 2014, and the Dutchman cost the Premier League side €9m. His appearances for the club were reduced due to injury, and last season he was sent out on loan to PSV.

With the player no longer in the plans of Rafael Benitez a return to the Netherlands always looked likely this summer.
