Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport report in their Tuesday edition that Lazio face giving up their pursuit of Florian Thauvin.
Gazzetta lay it on thick, explaining that Lazio have been trying to build a deal to sign Thauvin all summer.
Things are said to go back to when Marcelo Bielsa was set to be manager of the club, given that he worked with Thauvin at Marseille.
Despite Bielsa leaving Lazio before he even got started, Gazzetta say the club stuck to the Thauvin idea, and were therefore very keen to sign him.
Talks continued and Lazio had ‘virtually reached’ a transfer agreement with Newcastle United, for a fee around €12m.
However, Thauvin’s determination and desire to play for Marseille next season is likely to see Lazio miss out. Similar was reported by French newspaper L’Equipe this morning.
Anything can happen with Marseille, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see yet another twist in this one.
