Italian website TMW ‘revealed’ on Monday afternoon that Newcastle United have joined the list of clubs interested in signing Torino’s Josef Martinez. In what TMW are calling an exclusive, they say Rafael Benitez’s club have been added to the race alongside Bundesliga club Hamburg.
However, there’s nothing new here whatsoever. On Saturday, Turin newspaper Tuttosport actually had the exclusive, throwing Benitez and Newcastle into the rumour and saying Martinez was choosing which of the two clubs to join.
Benitez currently has Dwight Gayle, Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic to choose from upfront. The latter picked up an injury at the weekend, which will only encourage further links of Martinez and others.
On Sunday we had a look at the whole story, and it seems to be more that Torino are desperate to sell than clubs truly in a race to sign the player. Martinez may well have been offered to Newcastle, and to other clubs, but someone seems to be pushing the idea of more clubs being interested than actually are.
