Newcastle United are battling with AC Milan for the signing of Torino midfielder Soualiho Meïté this month.

That’s according to Milan News 24, who say the Magpies are one to ‘keep an eye on’ in the race for the 26-year-old’s signature.

The website explains that Meite is a target for the Serie A leaders, having impressed in the heart of Torino’s midfield this season.

They are ready to enter negotiations to try and sign him on loan this month, with the hope that they can do a deal at €1m with a right of redemption worth €7m tagged on.

However, they are not the only Italian side interested in his signature and, should Milan fail to get a deal over the line, it’s believed that Hellas Verona could move ‘forcefully’ themselves.

Both clubs, though, need to keep an eye on competition from abroad, ‘especially Newcastle’, who are also eyeing up the Frenchman.

Whether Newcastle are keen on a loan deal similar to Milan or a permanent deal isn’t mentioned, just that the interest from St James Park is there.

Given the finances at the club, though, it’s easy to imagine a loan, particularly for €1m, would suit them down to the ground.

Indeed, Steve Bruce did similar business last January when he brought in Nabil Bentaleb from Schalke, and it appears he’s eyeing up a similar winter reinforcement this year.

Newcastle United will have to worry, with claims on Thursday morning of an agreement between AC Milan and Torino.
